About

The Brisbane Portrait Prize is an annual competition for two-dimensional portraits where both artist and subject have a connection to Brisbane (to be explained in the entry). Both must be Australian citizens or have been physically present in Australia for the 12 months before entry; artists must be 18 or over (a Next Gen category covers artists 18 and under). At least one in-person sitting is required and the sitter must sign a consent form. Works must be completed within three years of entry, wall-mountable, no larger than 2 x 2 m and 15 kg. AI use is permitted but must be declared.

In 2025 over $100,000 in prizes and grants was available across the Main Prize, Next Gen, Salon des Refusés and People's Choice. The 2026 entry fee was $65 (Next Gen $25).

The 2026 cycle opened in January, closed 1 July 2026 and exhibited 19 September to 8 November 2026. 2027 dates have not yet been published.
