About
The Hariban Award has been held annually since 2014 by Benrido, the Kyoto atelier that still prints by the 19th-century collotype process. Photographers anywhere in the world, professional or amateur, submit a series of 8 to 12 black-and-white images on any subject; one entry per artist.
The Grand Prize winner travels to Kyoto for a two-week residency with Benrido's master printer to produce eight collotype prints, with flights, accommodation and production costs covered, followed by a solo exhibition the next spring and inclusion in the collotype catalogue. Juror's Choice and Benrido Award winners are featured in the catalogue and may take a tuition-free five-day course at the Benrido Collotype Academy.
The 2026 edition (13th) took entries from 1 April to 30 June 2026 at USD 50 (USD 40 early bird in April), with winners announced in early September 2026 and the catalogue due in April 2027. The 2027 call is expected to follow the same spring timetable.
