About
The Nakanojo Biennale has been held since 2007 in Nakanojo, Gunma Prefecture, using schools, warehouses, farmhouses and onsen villages as venues. Artists work on site in an artist-in-residence model and present the results during the festival. The 11th edition runs for 37 days from 18 September to 24 October 2027.
The 2027 open call was announced on 2 May 2026 and invited multidisciplinary artists in Japan and abroad with creative, innovative ideas or projects. Web applications closed at 23:59 on 12 July 2026 (mailed applications postmarked the same day). Guidelines are published as a PDF on the open call page; fees and support provided are set out there.
The next call is expected in 2028 for the 2029 edition.
