About
Sky Arts' Landscape Artist of the Year and Portrait Artist of the Year are televised competitions produced by Storyvault Films. Applicants submit images of their work (a self-portrait for PAOTY; a landscape painting and further works for LAOTY) and, if selected, paint a sitter or location in four hours at filmed heats, progressing to semi-finals and a final.
Under the Series 12 terms, entrants must currently have a base in the UK, Isle of Man, Channel Islands or Republic of Ireland, be aged 16 or over and hold a valid passport; amateurs, professionals and hobbyists are eligible. Work may be in any material excluding photography, video, sculpture and digital media including AI; the LAOTY landscape entry must be no larger than 110 x 110cm and made within the last five years.
The winner receives a £10,000 fee to create a commissioned artwork for a major British institution, plus £500 of materials from Cass Art. Portrait Artist of the Year Series 14 applications close 12 February 2027 (filming early 2027 at Battersea Arts Centre); Landscape Artist of the Year Series 13 applications close 22 March 2027 (filming spring/summer 2027).
