About
Presented annually by the Canadian Clay & Glass Gallery in Waterloo, Ontario, with the Keith and Winifred Shantz Fund for the Arts, the Winifred Shantz Award for Ceramics is described by the gallery as the only national award for emerging ceramic artists in Canada. It funds a period of independent research or other activities that advance the winner's practice; the winner's work is acquired for the gallery's permanent collection.
The winner receives $10,000, the runner-up $5,000 and up to three finalists $1,000 each ($18,000 in total). Winners and finalists are exhibited in the annual 'Emergence' exhibition alongside the RBC Award for Glass recipients (2026 edition: 23 May to 15 August 2026).
Eligibility is for Canadian emerging ceramic artists who have worked professionally for five to ten years as of the deadline. The 2026 call closed 25 January 2026 with notification in early March; the 2027 call is expected to follow a similar timetable.
