About

The Hand & Lock Prize for Embroidery has attracted artists from over 60 countries since 2000. The 2027 brief is 'Embroidery Beyond the Algorithm', inviting entrants to combine embroidery with other crafts and materials and to explore what makes work distinctly handmade.

Entrants register as Student or Open in either Textile Art or Fashion; one name per entry and no teams. First-round judging takes place in July, with finalists emailed on 25 July. Finalists deliver physical work to the London studio in September for the exhibition and awards. Past finalist exhibitions have been held at Gallery Rosenfeld, London.

Registration costs £29 (non-refundable), reduced by £10 for registrations before 31 January. Associate awards have come from the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers, the Embroiderers' Guild, Wilcom and the Royal School of Needlework. Prize amounts for 2027 were not listed at the time of checking.
