About

The Rome Prize has been awarded for over 130 years to support innovative, cross-disciplinary work in the arts and humanities. About thirty artists and scholars are chosen each year; Visual Arts is one of the disciplines.

Winners receive a bedroom with private bath and a private workspace at the Academy in Rome. Full-term fellowships run from early September to the following June with a $30,000 stipend; half-term fellows receive $16,000 and may start in September or February.

Applications for the 2027–28 fellowships close on 1 November 2026 (fee $50 for one application, $60 for two or more). Late applications are taken from 2 to 15 November for a higher fee ($80/$90). Visual Arts applicants give three references rather than letters. Applicants must be United States citizens at the time of application.
