About

Creative Art Works is hiring a Character Design Teaching Artist for in-person placements during the 2026-2027 academic year in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens. The role is rooted in illustration, character development and visual storytelling: guiding high-school-age students through character ideation, shape language, expression, gesture, costume design, world-building, narrative illustration and portfolio-ready character sheets.

The teaching artist collaborates with CAW programme staff on curriculum, teaches core design concepts alongside drawing and conceptual sketching, runs critique and iteration, manages the classroom, documents attendance and lessons, and prepares students' work for showcases.

Applicants need a BA or BFA in graphic design, art, digital arts or arts education (or equivalent), at least three years teaching youth in school or community settings, proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, professional experience in illustration, character design, comics, animation or concept art, and must clear New York City's PETS background check.

Pay is $45 to $53 an hour. Email a resume, cover letter, three references, sample lesson or student work and a digital portfolio to [email protected] with the subject line "[Your Name]: Character Design Teaching Artist (26-27)".
