About

The Sado Island Galaxy Art Festival takes place across Sado Island in Niigata, Japan, from 17 July to 7 November 2027. Its open call asks for proposals that respond to the island's natural environment, cultural heritage, history and local communities.

There are six categories: site-specific artworks, site-specific events and performances, community-engaged projects, gastronomy and food culture projects, advanced technology projects, and freestyle or experimental projects. Individuals and groups of any nationality aged 18 or over can apply, with up to two proposals each.

About four or five projects will be selected, each receiving a production grant of up to ¥2,000,000 depending on its scope. The organiser helps with accommodation arrangements, local research and production coordination, but travel and accommodation costs must be included in the project budget, and some projects need the artist on site for a period.

Applications are made through an online form and cost ¥1,500 per proposal, paid by card. The deadline is 22 December 2026 at 17:00 Japan time. Selected artists are announced from March 2027, with the full line-up around May 2027.
